History
The history of Gunning Road, and the Globe Pit goes back centuries. Far beyond the scope of this web page to document a year-by-year account of it.
At the Northern end of Gunning Road is a park and on one side of that is The Globe Pit SSSI. This piece of land has been used by a family since the early-mid 1950s as an allotment until the present day.

The land has significant historical significance, as such it has been visited by historians, researchers and others over the years – including some of the staff who worked on the TV show Time Team.
Over the years the land has been home to bees and chickens and fed the family vegetables and fruits. The land contains numerous apple trees, a large Oak tree, a conker tree and nut bushes.
There is no public access to the land. The land can only be accessed via entry through other private property.

What is an SSSI?
A Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is a protection given to a piece of land that presents historical or scientific significance.
These sites are preserved so that one-day science will be advanced enough with tools and equipment to learn from the site more than what is currently available.
Read the Woodland Trust web page about SSSI

We understand an adjoining homeowner has installed a gate at the bottom of their garden through which they enter the site and would appear to be cultivating vegetables on part of the site being sold. They have not enclosed that area, nor erected any fencing. Neither has there been any communication with them, nor any claim for possession. Prospective purchasers are deemed to have made their own enquiries and bid accordingly.
